Best of the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show

Last week marked the fifteenth time I’ve attended the always-amazing Consumer Electronics Show. With 158,000 attendees and 3,100 vendors exhibiting, it’s a trade show like no other I’ve ever seen, and “massive” doesn’t begin to describe it. In fact, this year I had a pedometer in my pocket and on the day I walked the most, I took 17,000+ steps, around nine miles. One day. Walking. Read more

Convert an AVI video to play on an Amazon Kindle Fire?

Just bought an Amazon Kindle Fire and it’s very slick, but I want to drop my own movies onto it, not just be trapped having to buy them – again – from the Amazon store. I already know how to rip my DVDs into “AVI” format for portability across devices, but how do I turn an AVI movie into something that the Kindle Fire can play?

How Do I Enable Wifi Wireless iPhone Sync In iTunes?

I’m really enthused about the possibility of wireless sync on my iPhone with the release of the new version of iTunes and iOS 5 for my iPhone 4, but rather than just thrash around I am hoping you can tell me how to quickly set up this feature on my Mac? Read more

How can I burn a DVD from an ISO disk image?

I’m running an old version of Windows Vista and just downloaded an install disk for Windows 7 from Microsoft to try out. Cool. Except I have no idea what to do with the 3GB “.ISO” file that I received. How can I burn it to make an install DVD and proceed?

How Can I Use My iPhone Internet Personal Hotspot Via USB?

I have a Personal Hotspot set up with my iPhone 4 via AT&T and it’s very nice, but I have heard that running it as a wifi hotspot actually eats up battery, so I’d like to use it as a tethered USB connection because it’ll also charge my phone at the same time. Is that possible, and if so, how do I set it up?

How To Pair Your Phone To A Bluetooth Stereo

I’m borrowing my girlfriend’s Chevy Equinox (don’t tell her, but I actually like it better than my Ford F10) and want to be able to use my Apple iPhone as a hands-free cell phone in the car. It has a fancy navigational system that includes bluetooth but I haven’t figured out all the steps necessary to pair the iPhone with the Equinox. Do you by any chance know how to do that, Dave?

Personal Tech Review: iPhone Skins

Ever since adhesive companies like 3M came up with high-quality sticker materials, companies have slowly but surely been licensing brands, logos and artwork to help us personalize our laptops, car windows and personal electronics. The first generation were a pain to work with because the stickers were often too sticky: put them on slightly wrong and you were quite literally “stuck” and lifting corners to erase stray bubbles or seams could end up ruining the skin and leave it unstuck on one side.

GarageBand Disk Error Solutions

I’ve been working extensively in Apple’s GarageBand on my MacBook Pro and it’s always worked great, except this afternoon I got the error message Core Audio: Disk is too slow (Write) (-10002). What does it mean and how do I fix it? Do I need a new disk drive??

Dave’s Answer:
This doesn’t arise too often for GarageBand users, from what I have been able to research, but there are definitely many discussions about this particular error message, the “disk is too slow” error, that you can find online.
Unfortunately I haven’t found any definitive answer about why you might suddenly see this after working for days, weeks or even months on your computer with the very same type of projects.

Tech Review: MiFi Station From Verizon

Imagine a device that’s about the size of three credit cards and can let you and four of your friends (or multiple of your devices) connect to the Internet at decent 3G speeds, all while sitting in your briefcase / computer bag / coat pocket. The up-and-coming “mifi” (mobile wifi) devices are a fascinating hybrid gizmo that offers the smallest wifi base station you can imagine, tapping into either the Verizon or Sprint data networks.

Cool Gadgets From CES 2009

Day Two of the huge Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, and we decided to check out the Central and North halls of the unimaginably massive Las Vegas Convention Center. The Central Hall seemed to be dominated by large tech companies, notably Microsoft, Intel, Motorola, and the like, along with a sprinkling of accessory manufacturers dwelling on the periphery.

The North Hall was in-car audio and mobile audio and devices, which was less well attended and, to my interests, less interesting. More amazing cars and lots of “booth babes” who were dressed exactly as they’d been for the almost cliché mechanic’s calendars they’d posed for in the first place. And lots of guys eager to pose for photos with ‘em, arm firmly in place around their barely clad waists.
